What to Expect at a Visit

First time going to a clinic?

Here's what it is like.

Most visits are quick, private, and meant to make you feel safe and supported. You are in control of your care, and nothing will be done without your consent.

What to Bring

ID

(not always needed, but helpful)

(if you have one—many places still help if you do not)

Questions or concerns

(you can write them down ahead of time)

 A trusted adult, friend, or support person

(optional, it is okay to go alone, too)

What Happens During a Visit

Check-in

You may fill out a form with your name, contact info, and the reason for your visit. This information stays private.

Waiting Room

You might wait a few minutes before being called in. Bring something to help you stay calm or distracted if needed.

Private Conversation

You will meet with a provider or nurse one-on-one. You can share what brought you in and talk about anything on your mind.

Services

You might get testing (like STI or pregnancy tests), information, treatment, or birth control—whatever you came in for. You always have the right to say no to anything.

Ask Questions

You can ask anything at any time. There are no “weird” or “dumb” questions.

Aftercare Info

You might get info to take home or instructions if you were tested or treated. Some clinics give you follow-up options or ways to reach out later.
